I'm sorting out many years' worth of papers and have just (7.12.12.) come across a letter written to me by Mike in January 1965. I studied at what was then the Bournemouth Municipal College of Art between 1958 and 1963, gaining a National Diploma in Design. I then returned briefly in 1964, at the age of 22, to teach, and found that Mike had joined the staff in my absence. I remember talking to him about my despair at a news report of New Yorkers encouraging a suicidal man on a ledge to jump. Also Mike's idea of creating cigarettes with varying amounts of nicotine, distinguished by packets which he had designed. (Given what we know about cigarette companies now, an obvious non-starter!)

A year late I wrote to him, thanking him for his support in my efforts to begin a freelance practice. Much of what he says in his reply (accompanied by an original Christmas card) still applies to my life at the age of 70 - "There s no respite. You cannot say you have ever won a battle. Keep going and that is your measure of success – whether you can keep up with events….The happiest place to be in life is right where you are now with yourself adjusted to behave at your best at this moment in time." Until I found the letter I could not have told you his name, but I've always remembered him, and I'm glad to see that he went on to a long life and success.
John Bennetts
molemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14291139556106001259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1788992031258195893.post-90754983290997324432010-08-22T21:04:48.415+01:002010-08-22T21:04:48.415+01:00We had a copy of this in a Puffin dump-bin otherwi...We had a copy of this in a Puffin dump-bin otherwise known as "the school library" when I was a kid.
