I do love each of the stuff quoted : 2000Ad classics, and modern independant tpb. The fact is I landed here because of the "Can opener"s daughter" traduction in France this month, and, after some web surfing, I promptly ordered "Nelson" to know more about the new english comic artist's generation. (That I only knew via 2000 AD :))
This IS a good thing going, and I'm gonna write about this on a french cool site : BDzoom, soon. ;-)
Long live comics, anyway, anywhere !
FGHectorvadairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10292741970088750020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1788992031258195893.post-3074856416782683712012-11-15T18:04:42.779+00:002012-11-15T18:04:42.779+00:00There's some evidence to support the idea that...There's some evidence to support the idea that 2000AD is a one generational thing. The people that get it are the people who grew up with it and there isn't much bleed in from outside that bubble. The problem with that is that as the fans mature and some of them eventually become contributors, they remake an adult version of what their childhood memories hold dear. So like Marvel & DC in the 70s it become an insular fanboy culture. I certainly hope not , but it's possible

Oh and by 'legible' I meant something you might actually WANT to read as well as are ABLE to. Perhaps I should have said 'approachable'.SiFraserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07190183638781423019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1788992031258195893.post-59210929381035226582012-10-15T19:37:18.229+01:002012-10-15T19:37:18.229+01:00Dante has been the only 2000ad story that my wife ...Dante has been the only 2000ad story that my wife would read. None of the other stories appealed enough for her to invest any time in them. Good to see BCA embracing some diverse and well created titles.Alexander Finbowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15337793295853370688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1788992031258195893.post-31642411784506380522012-10-15T13:43:26.488+01:002012-10-15T13:43:26.488+01:00Well, as I say, I'm clearly writing this as a ...Well, as I say, I'm clearly writing this as a 2000ad fan of old. Anecdotally, I tried to get my eldest (now 15) into 2k a little while ago and he felt like it was a foreign language.
Dante is more traditional for sure and the tpb is a different entry point.

It's not just 'easy to read' that's the issue as engaging beyond trad comic reading matter. It's great being able to hand stuff to people who don't read comics and not worry about them feeling 'alienated' straight away, as John says.
Rob Davishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02971248641347207358noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1788992031258195893.post-27296266480722767292012-10-15T13:25:04.037+01:002012-10-15T13:25:04.037+01:00I do agree that some 2000ad content can be pretty ...I do agree that some 2000ad content can be pretty much unreadable to the uninitiated . Some of us do make great efforts to be legible however. I designed Dante so my Mum could read it. Though years of continuity mean that 'waiting for the trade" is really the only way in. Such is the peril of serialized fiction.

I'm heartened by all the new work that has started to appear too. It's very healthy and diverse looking. The market is developing and maturing in a way that we only talked about in the 90s. The lumbering behemoths are having to lift their feet to make way for all those scrappy little mammalsSiFraserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07190183638781423019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1788992031258195893.post-71618699710668878332012-10-15T11:28:45.490+01:002012-10-15T11:28:45.490+01:00A friend of mine involved in the arts but not spec...A friend of mine involved in the arts but not specifically comics looked at a copy of 2000AD or something of that ilk and just said "it's alienating". I never really needed to give the issue any more thought. The BCAs really do embrace something different from that alienating, closed comics culture and for that reason they should be celebrated.John Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14630706251547357904noreply@blogger.com
